Gold and silver prices September 2011

Gold price experienced during August one of the biggest rallies in 2011. During August gold price nearly reached the $1,900 mark; silver price also inclined mainly in the second half of August, and even passed, at one point, the $43 mark. What were the main factors that contributed to these large gains during August? Much like in July, the sharp rises in gold price, had little to do (at least directly) with the fluctuations in US dollar against major currencies, and more to do with the speculations around the recovery of the US Economy, the ongoing debt crisis in Europe and the sharp falls in the US Stock markets. As the uncertainty in the financial markets inclined during the month, more traders pulled their funds from the stock market and invested in gold, silver and US Treasury bills.  So what is next for gold and silver prices in September 2011? Let’s examine the precious metals market for August and provide an outlook for gold and silver prices for September 2011.

Why You Should Not "Invest" in Gold

Don't get me wrong - I am certainly not against buying gold but as an asset class it is worthwhile seeing how it behaves differently to other investments such as stocks, bonds or real estate. When you buy a stock in IBM you receive a yearly dividend (hopefully) and (hopefully) the value of the stock goes up over time, the same when you buy real estate as an investment. With Gold it is a little bit different. The reason why gold is seen as a safe haven is that it is a store of value, it never loses its purchasing power. There is an oft quoted adage that an ounce of gold in Roman times would have bought an army officer a fine suit of clothes, that in Shakespeare's times an ounce of gold would have bought a good quality set of clothes and today with gold at just over $1000 this would buy you a good Armani Suit. BUT just as over time it does not lose purchasing power it does not increase purchasing power. The real long term nature of gold is as Insurance and not as an investment. As wars are fought, governments collapse, economies tumble people have rushed into gold because they know it is a place where they can preserve the wealth they have.

Yes you can point to gold's meteoric rise over the last 8 or so years and say what a great "investment" it has been but if you see gold as insurance and mainly buy it as that then you will be able to withstand volatile swings in price that often occur in the gold market, you will be less worried about day to day actions in price and you will perhaps see that the price of gold did not go up just the value paper money in your wallet went down.

Gold Will Protect Me From Coming Super or Hyperinflation - Or Maybe Not
Many gold commentators talk about excessive money printing by central banks, how it will inevitably lead to sky high inflation even hyperinflation and how gold will protect you. Well yes and no. Gold is not such a immediate hedge against inflation that everybody thinks as much as it a hedge against political risk. When Gold skyrocketed to $850 in 1980 it was not a reaction to high prices so much as to the uncertainty surrounding the future of the dollar. In the following years inflation still persisted but the gold price plummeted. Gold is a hedge against inflation really in the long term because in the long term it retains its purchasing power but will it rise 10% just because inflation rose 10% - history is unclear on that.

There is A High Risk of a Worldwide Currency Collapse - So Gold is the Only Safe Haven????
It is February 2010 and Greece is on the brink of bankruptcy with Portugal, Italy, Ireland and Spain all waiting in line to follow suit, if these countries go down then they will take many others with them. Countries like Germany will also be drastically effected because they lent the money, kept part of the debt and then sold the rest on to Insurance companies and Pension Funds along with insurance called Credit Derivatives. States in the USA like California and Illinois are in worse shape than Greece. The whole worldwide financial system is massively intertwined through a complex system of derivatives, there was massive over borrowing and someone will have to pay the piper. There is therefore a certain inevitability about a full on currency crisis making gold ever more attractive because it is no one's liability it cannot be printed ad infinitum. However much they try governments cannot corrupt it.

However inevitable a currency crisis or collapse may seem to you, for there to actually be one the majority of the market or at least the big players in that market have to agree with you. While the fundamentals are in place it can take a long time for the mass to catch on to those fundamentals. You may not be fooled by bailouts and government posturing but in the short term many people are. So for you to be proved right may take many years with lots of twists and turns.

What we face at the moment is a huge credit collapse never seen on such a magnitude before so who knows how it will play out. If you remember back to 2008 this particular crash caused the gold price to collapse and the dollar to strengthen -so in the short to medium term this could happen again. Once again if you see gold as insurance - the short to medium term does not matter so much.

Gold as Protection during a Financial Crisis
If gold is your only hedge against financial crisis then this could be playing with fire a little. Think that there are many scenarios where having gold will not help because no one has any use for it, no one wants to exchange their bag of wheat for your ounce of gold because well you cant really eat it. Gold is a great store of value but it is not the only one. Food, basic clothes, seeds, - essentials that people always need are also great stores of value with a much wider market so if you are motivated towards buying gold because you envision financial catastrophe then it may pay to have a good think about other stores of value. The great thing is about having a large store of food and essentials is that regardless what happens YOU will always need then. So it is never money down the drain!!!!

Bartering with Gold Could Prove Very Expensive
If you are investing in gold because you envision you may be bartering with it some day - well think on. I'm sure someone will swap a loaf for an ounce of gold but that will be a mighty expensive loaf!!!! Look at having precious metals in smaller denominations - junk silver coins - old US coins that have silver in them are a great alternative. They are easy to buy from any coin store and are very low denomination (a silver dime has less than$2 worth of silver in it )

Here are some links to articles that may be of use

Business around the World

Business around the World
Business around the World
Business around the World

While many history departments of American universities prefer to keep business as a separate discipline, HBS entrepreneurship professor Geoffrey Jones encourages the examination of history as a way to better understand contemporary management issues.

To that end, Jones and Franco Amatori, a professor at Bocconi University in Milan, co-edited Business History around the World (Cambridge University Press 2004), a report on the current state of business history worldwide. Recently Jones took time to explain the importance of this new book, to which he also contributed chapters.

Cynthia Churchwell: What inspired your work analyzing the study of business history around the world?

Geoffrey Jones: There were two main factors driving our desire to bring together this survey of the current state of business history worldwide.

First, there has been an explosive growth of research over the last decade. Ten years ago our knowledge of the history of business was heavily concentrated on the cases of the United States, Japan, Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia. Since then there has been exciting new research on the business history of other European countries, especially Italy and Spain, on many Latin American countries, especially Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico, and on Chinese-speaking communities. Much of the best research is only available in local languages.

Business historians have also widened their research agendas. Understanding the evolution of the strategies and structures of large manufacturing corporations remains important, but a new generation of researchers has explored business networks, the family firm, knowledge creation and transfer, public policy and business, and a host of other topics. We wanted to bring together this new literature and perspectives and make it accessible, in English, to a broader audience.

Additionally, we felt that the moment was opportune for such a survey because the discipline of business history is at a crossroads. There are some researchers who wish the subject to be embedded firmly within the discipline of history, and to address the primary concerns of that discipline. In the United States, many history departments are currently heavily concerned with topics relating to culture, ethnicity, and gender. There is often an unwillingness to relate these important topics to business. Other scholars, including myself, perceive of business history as playing a central role in enhancing our understanding of key issues in contemporary management and business administration. The book provides a position statement of where we are now, which we hope will enrich the debate about the future direction and research agenda of the discipline.

Q: How does this new work differ from your previous research on multinationals?

A: This new book reflects my longstanding interest in the diversity of the business past. Much of my own research has been concerned with the historical evolution of multinationals. However, although research on this topic has often focused on high technology manufacturing companies, I have written extensively on the service sector, on business groups and alliances rather than hierarchical corporations, and on the different ways the entrepreneurs and firms of different countries have pursued strategies and organized their businesses. The contributors to this new book bring out this rich diversity on a much broader canvass.

Q: What have you learned about the success and impact of businesses around the world?

A: This book shows how entrepreneurs and firms have occupied center stage in driving the wealth of nations. It also demonstrates that there has never been a single model for successful or unsuccessful capitalism.

To give only one example, business and economic historians have often taken a skeptical view of the merits of family-owned and -managed firms. Harvard Business School's Alfred Chandler, the doyen of business historians, famously ascribed Britain's relative economic decline to the United States from the late nineteenth century to that country's proclivity towards family or "personal capitalism." This was contrasted with the separation of ownership and control and the growth of professional management seen in the United States. That debate continues. But this book does report compelling research that shows that, historically, family ownership and management in many countries has been a dynamic force. Leading firms such as Michelin in France, Heineken in the Netherlands, or Cargill or Mars in the United States are the tip of a huge iceberg of successful and long-lived family firms worldwide. Even today around a third of Fortune 500 companies are family controlled.

World Gold

Crown Butte Mines, Inc. wants to develop its New World gold mine deposit located near Yellowstone National Park. The proposed mine is located almost entirely on private property about 3 miles east of the northeast corner of Yellowstone National Park and next to the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness area. The New World Mine Project would mine an estimated 1,800 tons of gold/silver/copper ore per day (500,000 tons annually), valued at an estimated $800 million over a 10-15 year period. The project would include an underground mine, an ore processing mill, a tailings pond, a waste rock storage site, access roads, a work camp and transmission lines. A draft environmental impact statement (EIS), required under both NEPA and the Montana Environmental Policy Act, is in the final months of a three-year preparation.
The project has stirred controversy because of its possible environmental impacts. Environmental groups oppose the project because of the potential for damage to water, recreational assets and wildlife in the area, and in particular, to Yellowstone Park itself. Crown Butte maintains it would employ "state-of-the-art" technology to contain waste in a proposed 106-acre tailings pond. Opponents of the project fear that the tailings pond may fail in the future due to earthquakes, avalanches or other events, leading to acid mine drainage. Several permits from the federal and state level are required to operate the mine and mill. The issuing agencies could approve the mine plan, approve the plan with stipulations, or deny the permit. Without the necessary permits, mine development could not go forward.
Environmentalists have received support from two highly visible events. In July 1995, the President called for a moratorium on mine patents and new claims on federal lands in the area around the mine site. In December 1995, the United Nations World Heritage Committee declared the Yellowstone National Park "in danger" because of the New World mine proposal, and other activities in the area. In the 104th Congress, a Senate proposal (S. 1737) would permanently withdraw from location under the Mining Law 19,000 acres, and affect 5,000 additional acres of federal lands near the Crown Butte mine site. A House bill (H.R. 1846) would withdraw lands upstream from the Park. None of these measures would affect the New World Mine directly, but might affect the economics of the project by precluding future expansion.

gold mining stock

Gold Mining Stock ChartOver the past couple of years while most investments have slouched and gold has held steady, the most profitable investment for me has been my gold mining stock segment, which have increased in value a fair bit. The returns may not be life changing, but making a reasonable profit is much better than losing a ton!

Since gold mining stocks are a good option and could be for some time, what makes a solid gold mining stock? The average person might just look at their stock price over the past few years, and if it's going up they think it's a good stock. But that's a bad strategy. You have to look at the value of the gold mining company's assets and compare that to the stock price.

You need to know the value of the company's proved gold reserves. Proved reserves means the amount of gold that has been determined, within reason, to be present and accessible through mining. These are the company's main assets. Let's say gold company A has $20 billion in proved reserves, and there are 10 million shares, and each share costs $100. But when you divide 20 billion by 10 million (the number of shares) you discover that the value of their assets is $200 per share. That means that this is an undervalued stock. You should buy this stock.

There is also the converse situation in which a company's stock is overvalued when you divide the number of stocks into the value of the company's proved reserves. As with all stocks, gold mining stocks can be under or overvalue but when they are, that means there will be a correction at some point not too far down the line. You want to buy undervalue stocks.

There is another way to measure potential value of mining stocks, and that is by probable reserves. Probably reserved are thought to be present, but their presence is not definite so they factor into the price of a company's stock at a discount rate. If you find a mining stock with a large number of probably reserves that turn out to be truly present, you could make a lot of money. If they turn out not to be present, you would lose a lot of money. So I prefer to be a little more secure and I only look at proved reserves.

This is a simple guideline and not exact. To find out the real value of the stock you would also have to factor in the cost of extracting gold from the ground.
